Manufacturer's description

Hydraulic fluid – high-performance, readily biodegradable saturated synthetic esters. Shell PANOLIN S4 HLP Synth EAL is formulated with zinc-free additive technology and high-performance fully synthetic saturated esters to deliver a remarkable blend of lubrication performance and environmental acceptability. Readily biodegradable with low ecotoxicity, Shell PANOLIN S4 HLP Synth EAL hydraulic fluids are particularly suitable for use in environmentally sensitive areas where eco-label compliance is required, including US waters. For use in stationary and mobile hydraulic systems, including marine and deck equipment, construction and forestry.

Applications

  • Meets the requirements of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP)
  • For the full list of equipment approvals and recommendations, please consult your local Shell technical helpdesk. Compatibility and miscibility: It is strongly recommended that an oil sample be taken from the system after changeover and analysed via the Shell LubeAnalyst service, to confirm that the new fluid charge is fit for use.
  • This lubricant must not be mixed with other biodegradable hydraulic fluids, in order to ensure that the fluid's environmental properties and performance are maintained. The system should be drained and flushed thoroughly when changing fluids; guidance on fluid change-over can be found in ISO 15380 Annex A.
  • This lubricant is compatible with fluoroelastomers (FPM/FKM) such as Viton. Other seal materials and system components, such as paints, may be adversely affected, and advice should be sought from the respective manufacturers.
  • Swedish Standard SS 15 54 34 SP
  • Biodegradable, OECD 301B >60%

Performance & benefits

  • Extended oil life: designed to help equipment operate without interruptions; longer oil-drain intervals mean less oil being produced, purchased and disposed of; good oxidative stability reduces fluid degradation, filter blockage and viscosity increase, helping prevent component failures and related parts and labour costs.
  • Premium wear protection: designed to help equipment operate without interruptions, offering exceptional wear protection for hydraulic equipment.
  • Designed to protect even in cold climates: good cold-flow behaviour enables a safe start even in cold conditions, reducing the risk of metal-on-metal wear; high-viscosity-index fluids help enable increased hydraulic efficiency compared with a typical HM mineral oil.
  • Lower environmental impact: an environmentally acceptable lubricant as defined by the USA EPA 2013 Vessel General Permit, with reduced impact from leaks or accidental spillage in marine environments compared with conventional mineral oils; readily biodegradable - over 60% in 28 days in the OECD 301B test - and low ecotoxicity.

Standards & approvals

  • EU Ecolabel

The European Union's voluntary ecolabel, certifying that a product, including lubricants, meets reduced-environmental-impact criteria across its life cycle.

  • ISO 15380 HEES

Biodegradable hydraulic fluid HEES — ISO 15380

The international standard for biodegradable hydraulic fluids; class HEES is the synthetic ester type, the most used where a leak would reach water or soil.

  • OECD 301B

    OECD 301B biodegradability above 60 %

A test result rather than a norm: OECD 301B measures the carbon dioxide evolved over 28 days. Above 60 % counts as "readily biodegradable", the threshold the environmental labels require.

  • SS 15 54 34 SP

SS 15 54 34 — environmental requirements for hydraulic fluids (Sweden)

The Swedish standard requiring high biodegradability, low aquatic toxicity, and that the finished fluid not be classified as environmentally hazardous. It is required near groundwater and drinking water sources; verified products appear on the "SP list".
