Manufacturer's description

Shell Tellus S4 ME hydraulic fluids are intended to help users improve the efficiency of their hydraulic systems without compromising system protection or equipment maintenance procedures. Shell Tellus S4 ME has demonstrated improved energy efficiency across a wide range of applications, such as plastic injection moulding, metal pressing and mining conveyors. In addition, Shell Tellus S4 ME helps extend service intervals and lower maintenance costs by providing outstanding wear protection and a long oil life.

Applications

  • Industrial hydraulic systemsSuitable for systems with high intensity of hydraulic power usage, such as plastic injection moulding and metal pressing, and where resistance and long oil life are required.
  • Mobile hydraulic systemsShell Tellus S4 ME is suitable for use in certain mobile hydraulic power transmission systems and in marine applications, where it offers superior low-temperature fluidity compared with conventional ISO HM type fluids.
  • Environmental impactShell Tellus S4 ME offers a reduced environmental impact in the event of leaks or accidental spillage compared with conventional zinc-based fluids, thanks to its ashless anti-wear technology and the low sulphur content of the base oil. For an even lower environmental impact, we offer the Shell Naturelle range of environmentally acceptable lubricants. Specifications, approvals and recommendations

  • CompatibilityShell Tellus S4 ME fluids are suitable for use with most hydraulic pumps.
  • Fluid compatibilityShell Tellus S4 ME is compatible with most other mineral hydraulic oils. However, hydraulic fluids must not be mixed with other types (for example fire-resistant or biodegradable fluids).
  • Compatible with seal materials and paintsShell Tellus S4 ME fluids are compatible with the seal materials and paints normally specified for use with mineral oils.

Performance & benefits

  • Developed using sophisticated system modelling to improve the energy efficiency of hydraulic systems, through a special formulation that balances the flow, friction and power-transmission characteristics of the fluid; carefully monitored evaluations show savings of 1-4% in some applications.
  • Offers outstanding performance in relevant hydraulic fluid properties, such as hydraulic pump wear and resistance to breakdown in contact with water or other contaminants.
  • A service life exceeding the industry maximum of 10,000 hours measured by the TOST (Turbine Oil Stability Test) allows an extended drain interval, helping reduce maintenance costs.
  • In addition to meeting industry standards and OEM specifications, it provides an exceptional additional level of protection, with up to 68% less wear in the Vickers V104C pump test for OEMs such as Cincinnati Machine, Bosch-Rexroth and Eaton.
  • Superior cleaning power, meeting ISO 4406 21/19/16 class, matching Shell's former first-fill standards.

Standards & approvals

  • Parker Denison HF-0 — hydraulic fluid, most severe level

The most severe level of the Denison hydraulic fluid specification: the oil must pass the wear test on both a vane pump and a piston pump, dry and in the presence of water. HF-0 subsumes HF-1 and HF-2.

  • Fives Cincinnati P-70

Fives Cincinnati P-70 — ISO VG 46 hydraulic oil

An approval number from the Fives Cincinnati list of fluids for use in its own machine tools. Approved hydraulic fluids must pass its own wear, filterability and water separation tests, beyond the DIN 51524-2 level.

  • Eaton Vickers (Brochure 694)

Eaton Vickers Brochure 694 — fluid requirements

The Vickers brochure that set the classic requirements for hydraulic oils in vane and piston pumps: cleanliness, antiwear performance and thermal stability.

  • Bosch Rexroth RE 90220

Bosch Rexroth RE 90220 — mineral hydraulic fluids

Bosch Rexroth’s data sheet for hydraulic fluids based on mineral oil and related hydrocarbons, for its own pumps and motors: filterability, cleanliness and antiwear requirements beyond DIN 51524-2.

  • ASTM D 6158 HM

ASTM D6158, type HM — antiwear hydraulic oil

The American standard for mineral hydraulic oils of type HM, that is, oils with antiwear additives. It is the ASTM counterpart of DIN 51524-2 HLP and ISO 11158 HM.

  • ISO 11158 HM

Hydraulic oil, type H HM — ISO 11158

The international standard for mineral hydraulic fluids; class HM is the antiwear oil, the ISO counterpart of DIN 51524-2 HLP.

  • DIN 51524-2 HLP

Hydraulic oil HLP — DIN 51524, part 2

Part 2 of the German hydraulic fluid standard: HLP oils — mineral oils with oxidation, corrosion and antiwear additives. It is the most widely quoted reference in industrial hydraulics.

  • SS 15 54 34 AM

SS 15 54 34 — environmental requirements for hydraulic fluids (Sweden)

The Swedish standard requiring high biodegradability, low aquatic toxicity, and that the finished fluid not be classified as environmentally hazardous. It is required near groundwater and drinking water sources; verified products appear on the "SP list".

  • ISO 6743-4 HM

    ISO 6743-4 HM — anti-wear hydraulic oil

The ISO lubricant family classification for anti-wear hydraulic oils (category HM), the ISO counterpart of DIN 51524-2 HLP.Source
