Manufacturer's description

Advanced synthetic, zinc-based hydraulic oil using Gas-to-Liquid (GTL) technology. Shell Tellus S4 VE hydraulic fluids are based on Gas-to-Liquid (GTL) technology and are designed for a wide range of stationary and mobile applications, with a very long oil life, a wide operating temperature window, impactful energy efficiency and robust equipment protection. Shell Tellus S4 VE allows customers to achieve potential cost savings through longer equipment life and lower maintenance costs.

Applications

  • Mobile hydraulic systemsShell Tellus S4 VE, with its wide operating window, long oil drain intervals, superior system operating characteristics and many OEM approvals, is designed to be particularly suitable for mobile hydraulic systems, such as construction and mining machinery.
  • Industrial hydraulic systemsShell Tellus S4 VE, with its energy efficiency benefits and long oil life, is designed to be particularly suitable for stationary industrial hydraulic systems with a high intensity of hydraulic power usage, such as injection moulding and high-pressure metal pressing operations.
  • Wind turbinesWind turbine systems are exposed to harsh conditions, such as extremely cold climates and humid regions, including offshore locations. Shell Tellus S4 VE, with its high-performance additives in a GTL base oil, ensures a long service life, while its high viscosity index delivers responsive performance even under cold start conditions.
  • Marine hydraulic systemsShell Tellus S4 VE is recommended for marine applications where ISO HV category hydraulic fluids are recommended. Specifications, approvals and recommendations

  • CompatibilityShell Tellus S4 VE fluids are suitable for use with most hydraulic pumps.
  • Fluid compatibilityShell Tellus S4 VE fluids are compatible with most other mineral and synthetic hydraulic fluids. However, mineral and synthetic hydraulic fluids must not be mixed with other fluid types (for example environmentally acceptable or fire-resistant fluids).
  • Compatible with seal materialsShell Tellus S4 VE fluids are compatible with the seal materials specified for use with mineral and synthetic oils.

Performance & benefits

  • Made with GTL base oil and high-performance additive technology, it targets maximum hydraulic efficiency, which can reduce energy consumption by 1-5% in both industrial and mobile equipment.
  • Allows extended maintenance schedules through longer oil life, exceptional wear protection for hydraulic equipment and strong protection against sludge and varnish formation.
  • An advanced-performance, shear-stable hydraulic oil based on GTL base oil technology with a high viscosity index and strong thermal and oxidative stability; can reach a life of up to 10,000 hours, as measured by the Turbine Oil Stability Test (TOST).
  • Rapid air release makes it ideal for modern hydraulic systems with small reservoirs, reducing noise and pump wear by minimising air contamination on the high-pressure side.
  • Excellent filtration and water-separation performance keeps equipment clean, and optimised stick-slip performance allows precise operation and control; meets and exceeds the strict ISO 4406 cleanliness requirements.
  • Demonstrates remarkable performance even in the strictest pump tests, such as Bosch Rexroth RDE 90245, Denison T6H20C (dry and wet versions) and Eaton Vickers 35VQ25, with proven performance over thousands of hours of field testing, from excavators to plastics moulding and injection machines.
  • Special high-viscosity-index base oils (GTL technology) and viscosity modifiers minimise viscosity variation with temperature; good sub-zero fluidity allows pumping at low temperatures, prevents cavitation, saves energy and shortens warm-up time.
  • Provides durable equipment performance at high temperatures; the wide operating temperature window allows this hydraulic oil to be used across most seasons.

Standards & approvals

  • Bosch Rexroth RE 90245

Bosch Rexroth RE 90245 — hydraulic fluid rating list

Bosch Rexroth's list of hydraulic fluids rated for use in its own pumps and motors. A fluid is listed after passing wear testing on axial piston pumps.

  • Parker Denison HF-0 — hydraulic fluid, most severe level

The most severe level of the Denison hydraulic fluid specification: the oil must pass the wear test on both a vane pump and a piston pump, dry and in the presence of water. HF-0 subsumes HF-1 and HF-2.

  • Eaton E-FDGN-TB002-E

    Eaton E-FDGN-TB002-E — hydraulic fluids

The Eaton technical bulletin listing the requirements for hydraulic fluids in Eaton and Vickers equipment, including the vane pump wear test.

  • GB 11118.1 L-HV

GB 11118.1-94, type HV — hydraulic oil (China)

The 1994 issue of the Chinese hydraulic fluid standard, class HV — an antiwear oil with a high viscosity index.

  • JCMAS P 041

    JCMAS P 041 — hydraulic fluid low-temperature test

The Japanese construction-machinery test method assessing hydraulic-fluid performance (pumpability, viscosity behaviour) at normal and low temperatures.

  • ASTM D 6158 HV

ASTM D6158, type HV — high-viscosity-index hydraulic oil

The HV class of ASTM D6158: an antiwear hydraulic oil with a high viscosity index that holds its fluidity across a wide temperature range — typical for equipment working outdoors.

  • ISO 11158 HV

Hydraulic oil, type H HV — ISO 11158

Class HV of ISO 11158: an antiwear hydraulic oil with a high viscosity index, for systems exposed to wide temperature swings.

  • DIN 51524-3 HVLP

Hydraulic oil HVLP — DIN 51524, part 3

Part 3 of the German hydraulic fluid standard: HVLP oils, with the same additive package as HLP but a high viscosity index, for systems working across a wide temperature range.

  • DIN 51524

    Hydraulic oil — DIN 51524

The German standard for mineral hydraulic fluids, in three parts: HL (part 1), HLP (part 2) and HVLP (part 3), by additive package and viscosity index.
