Manufacturer's description

Advanced synthetic oil for wind turbine gears. Shell Omala S5 Wind advanced synthetic wind turbine gear oil delivers excellent lubrication performance, even under severe operating conditions. The innovative formulation is developed to protect wind turbine gears and bearings by reducing wear, protecting against micro-pitting, maintaining efficient fluidity at extremely low temperatures and having a low tendency to foam.

Applications

  • Wind turbine main gearboxesShell Omala S5 Wind is specially designed to deliver optimum performance and a long service life. It is engineered to lubricate and protect wind turbine main gearboxes, even under the extremely harsh conditions of cold regions and humid regions, including offshore locations
  • Low-speed gears and step-up/step-down gearingShell Omala S5 Wind is also suitable for use in wind turbine auxiliary gearboxes, such as pitch drives, where an ISO 320 mm2/s viscosity, PAO or mineral oil is specified. Typical physical properties. Specifications, approvals and recommendations: meets or exceeds the following industry standards
  • GB/T 33540.3-2017Meets or exceeds the OEM requirements
  • SuzlonApproved by
  • VestasMeets or exceeds the following OEM requirements
  • FreudenbergFor the full list of approvals and recommendations, please consult the Shell Technical Help Desk. Compatibility and miscibility: Shell Omala S5 Wind is compatible with the seals, paints and sealing materials used by the leading gearbox OEMs. Changing over to Omala S5 Wind: Shell Omala S5 Wind is compatible with other Shell PAO (polyalphaolefin) gearbox oils. To benefit from the full performance and advantages of Shell Omala S5 Wind, complete draining, flushing and refilling with Omala S5 Wind is recommended.

Performance & benefits

  • Long life - reduced maintenance: designed with a new-generation additive technology and a high-performance Poly-Alpha-Olefin (PAO) base fluid, giving exceptional resistance to breakdown over the maintenance interval; guards against deposit formation to extend oil and gearbox life, offering the potential for significantly extended service intervals compared with conventional mineral industrial gear oils.
  • Excellent corrosion and wear protection: high levels of load-carrying capacity, high micro-pitting performance and resistance across a wide range of operating temperatures, even under low-speed/high-torque conditions; excellent rust and corrosion resistance, even in the presence of seawater.
  • Improves system efficiency: developed to maintain and improve the efficiency of wind-turbine gearboxes through improved low-temperature fluidity, rapid air release, foam resistance and excellent water-separation properties.
  • Cleanliness: a high level of fluid cleanliness is maintained throughout manufacture, meeting the level required by wind-turbine and gearbox OEMs, and exceeding the requirements of filtration equipment manufacturers relevant to the wind-turbine industry.

Standards & approvals

  • ISO 12925-1 CKD

Industrial gear lubricant CKD — ISO 12925

Class CKD of ISO 12925-1: a gear oil with the same additive package as CKC but greater thermal stability, for gear units running hot.

  • AGMA 9005-E02

    ANSI/AGMA 9005-E02 (2002)

The 2002 edition of the AGMA enclosed gear drive lubrication practice. Still widely quoted on datasheets although superseded by the 2016 F16 edition.

  • IEC 61400-4

    IEC 61400-4 — wind-turbine gearboxes

The IEC design standard for wind-turbine gearboxes, including lubricant selection and testing requirements referenced by gear-oil makers.

  • DIN 51517-3 CLP

Industrial gear oil CLP — DIN 51517, part 3

Part 3 of the German lubricating oil standard: class CLP, gear oils with extreme-pressure additives. It requires an FZG pass plus corrosion and ageing protection.
