Synthetic Ester Electrical Insulating Liquid, Fire Safe and Biodegradable. Shell MIDEL 7131 is a biodegradable, synthetic ester electrical insulating liquid. It is designed to provide an alternative to conventional mineral oil, silicone fluid and dry-type transformers. It offers robust low temperature performance and extended asset life. Shell MIDEL 7131 has a high fire point, significantly increasing the fire safety of your transformers and reducing the need for fire protection equipment. It is also biodegradable, avoiding environmental damage should leakage occur and enabling simplifications in containment measures.
IEC 61099 — synthetic ester insulating liquids
The IEC specification for unused synthetic organic ester liquids for electrical purposes, such as transformer fluids.
ASTM D8240 — synthetic ester insulating liquids
The ASTM specification for unused synthetic ester dielectric fluids for electrical apparatus, the American counterpart of IEC 61099.
IEC 61039 — classification of insulating liquids
The IEC classification of insulating liquids by fire-safety class (K-class, based on fire point/net calorific value), used to select less-flammable transformer fluids.
UL Listed — safety certification
Underwriters Laboratories’ safety listing/approval mark, cited here for dielectric (transformer) fluids.Source
OECD 301B biodegradability above 60 %
A test result rather than a norm: OECD 301B measures the carbon dioxide evolved over 28 days. Above 60 % counts as "readily biodegradable", the threshold the environmental labels require.
