Manufacturer's description

Environmentally Acceptable Saturated Synthetic Ester Gear and Bearing Fluid. Shell Naturelle S4 Gear Fluid is an advanced synthetic fluid for gearing applications such as thrusters and propulsion drives. Manufactured from fully saturated esters, it is designed to deliver superior load-carrying performance while meeting the requirements for Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EAL) as defined by the US EPA 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP).

Applications

  • Marine propulsion drives, thrusters and controllable pitch propellers
  • Industrial gears, bearings and other components in circulated and splash lubricated systems

Performance & benefits

  • Lower Environmental ImpactAn ‘environmentally acceptable lubricant’ as defined by the US EPA 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP). Offers reduced impact of leaks or accidental spillage into aquatic and marine environments compared to conventional mineral gear oil thanks to their higher biodegradability (Publication EPA 800-R-11-002) At least 90% by mass of this lubricant's components are readily biodegradable, achieving a passing result of ≥60% according to OECD 301B. Particularly suited for applications mandating compliance with US EPA 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP) requirements for environmentally acceptable lubricants.
  • High viscosity indexProvides a shear stable lubricant which helps to protect components over a wide temperature range.
  • Longer service lifeFully saturated esters ensure excellent resistance to oxidation and hydrolysis while offering high temperature thermal stability. Shell Naturelle S4 Gear Fluid offers the potential to extend service intervals compared to conventional mineral gear oils.
  • Load carrying and wear protectionShell Naturelle S4 Gear Fluid is formulated to have excellent load carrying capacity and anti scuffing performance. Advanced non toxic additives provide protection over a wide range of conditions and ensure long component life, even under shock loading conditions.
  • Maintaining system efficiencyShell Naturelle S4 Gear fluid has excellent water separation properties. Excess water can be easily drained from lubrication systems; which helps to extend the life of equipment and ensures efficient lubrication of contact areas.

Standards & approvals

  • US EPA VGP

US EPA Vessel General Permit (VGP)

EPA permit that requires environmentally acceptable lubricants at oil-to-sea interfaces of vessels.Source

  • DIN 51517-3 CLP E

    Industrial gear oil CLP E 68 / 100 /150 — DIN 51517, part 3

Ester-based EP gear oils to DIN 51517-3 in three viscosity grades. The ester base makes them biodegradable and heat-resistant.

  • ISO 14635-1

FZG gear scuffing test — ISO 14635-1

The international (ISO) version of the FZG back-to-back gear rig scuffing test; results are reported as the load stage reached without scuffing under the specified A/8.3/90 test condition.

  • OECD 301B

    OECD 301B biodegradability above 60 %

A test result rather than a norm: OECD 301B measures the carbon dioxide evolved over 28 days. Above 60 % counts as "readily biodegradable", the threshold the environmental labels require.
