Manufacturer's description

Industrial gear oil – readily biodegradable saturated synthetic esters. Shell PANOLIN S4 Gear EAL is an advanced synthetic fluid for use in gearing applications, such as marine thrusters and propulsion drives. Industrial gears, bearings and other components in circulating and splash-lubricated systems. Manufactured from fully saturated esters, Shell PANOLIN S4 Gear EAL is designed to deliver outstanding load carrying performance while also being readily biodegradable with low ecotoxicity. Shell PANOLIN S4 Gear EAL is an environmentally acceptable lubricant (EAL) and holds the EU Ecolabel.

Applications

  • Meets the requirements of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP)
  • For the full list of equipment approvals and recommendations, please consult your local Shell technical helpdesk. US EPA 2013 Vessel General Permit, offering a reduced impact from leaks or accidental spillage into the environment when used in marine environments, compared with conventional mineral oils. Compatibility and miscibility: It is strongly recommended that an oil sample be taken from the system after changeover and analysed via the Shell Rapid Lubricants Analysis service, to confirm that the new fluid charge is fit for use.
  • Fluid compatibilityShell PANOLIN fluids are miscible with mineral oils. However, to ensure that the environmental properties and performance of Shell PANOLIN fluids are maintained, the system should be drained and flushed thoroughly when changing fluids.
  • Meets the EU Ecolabel requirements - DE/027/289
  • Biodegradable, OECD 301B >60%

Typical physical properties: kinematic viscosity mm2/s @40 °C; pour point °C; flash point °C; density @15 °C kg/m3

Performance & benefits

  • Increased wear protection: formulated for excellent load-carrying capacity and anti-scuffing performance, with advanced non-toxic additives that provide protection over a wide range of conditions and ensure long component life, including protection against micro-pitting, even under shock-loading conditions.
  • Maintaining system efficiency: high viscosity index with shear stability helps protect components over a wide temperature range; low pour point and good cold-flow characteristics provide protection and performance even in cold climates.
  • Longer service life: strong oxidative stability at high temperatures reduces fluid degradation, filter blockage and viscosity increase, helping prevent component failures, frequent filter and fluid changes, downtime, and parts and labour costs.
  • Lower environmental impact: an environmentally acceptable lubricant as defined by the USA EPA 2013 Vessel General Permit, with reduced impact from leaks or accidental spillage in marine environments compared with conventional mineral oils; readily biodegradable - over 60% in 28 days in the OECD 301B test - and low ecotoxicity.

Standards & approvals

  • OECD 301B

    OECD 301B biodegradability above 60 %

A test result rather than a norm: OECD 301B measures the carbon dioxide evolved over 28 days. Above 60 % counts as "readily biodegradable", the threshold the environmental labels require.
