Manufacturer's description

Special-purpose biodegradable synthetic stern tube fluid. Shell PANOLIN S4 Stern Tube Fluid EAL 100 is a non-emulsifying synthetic fluid developed specifically for use in stern tubes. Manufactured from fully saturated esters, Shell PANOLIN S4 Stern Tube Fluid EAL 100 is designed to deliver excellent lubrication performance while also being readily biodegradable with low toxicity. Shell PANOLIN S4 Stern Tube Fluid EAL 100 is an environmentally acceptable lubricant (EAL) and holds the EU Ecolabel.

Applications

  • Meets the requirements of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP)
  • Meets the EN 16807-2016 criteria for bio-lubricants and bio-based lubricants
  • For the full list of equipment approvals and recommendations, please consult your local Shell technical helpdesk. Compatibility and miscibility: It is strongly recommended that an oil sample be taken from the system after changeover and analysed via the Shell rapid lubricants analysis service, to confirm that the new fluid is fit for use.
  • Fluid compatibilityShell PANOLIN fluids are miscible with mineral oils. However, to ensure that the environmental properties and performance of Shell PANOLIN fluids are maintained, the system should be drained and flushed thoroughly when changing fluids.
  • Meets the EU Ecolabel requirements - NL/027/028
  • Approved by Aegir-Marine
  • It is strongly recommended that an oil sample be taken from the system after changeover and analysed via the Shell rapid lubricants analysis service, to confirm that the new fluid is fit for use. Typical physical properties: kinematic viscosity mm2/s @40 °C; pour point °C; flash point °C; density @15 °C kg/m3

Performance & benefits

  • Longer service life: fully saturated esters provide excellent oxidation resistance, reducing fluid degradation; good hydrolytic stability allows a longer oil life.
  • Increased wear protection: advanced additives provide protection over a wide range of conditions and strong corrosion protection for stern-tube bearings; high viscosity index enables low-torque system start-up at lower temperatures and maintains fluid film thickness at higher operating temperatures.
  • Maintains system efficiency: excellent foam-control and demulsibility (water-separation) properties, combined with load-carrying characteristics that help reduce consumption.
  • Lower environmental impact: recommended for environmentally sensitive areas; an environmentally acceptable lubricant as defined by the USA EPA 2013 Vessel General Permit, with reduced impact from leaks or accidental spillage in marine environments compared with conventional mineral oils; readily biodegradable - over 60% in 28 days in the OECD 301B test - and low ecotoxicity.

Standards & approvals

  • OECD 301B

    OECD 301B biodegradability above 60 %

A test result rather than a norm: OECD 301B measures the carbon dioxide evolved over 28 days. Above 60 % counts as "readily biodegradable", the threshold the environmental labels require.

  • EU Ecolabel

The European Union's voluntary ecolabel, certifying that a product, including lubricants, meets reduced-environmental-impact criteria across its life cycle.
