Marcol 52 is a medicinal-grade white oil: a purified mixture of liquid saturated hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum through several refining stages, including an ultimate purification by catalytic hydrogenation. It is a colourless, transparent oily liquid that is essentially odourless and tasteless, manufactured to exceed the purity requirements of the Pharmacopoeias. Thanks to its superior chemical inertness, it shows better colour and oxidative stability than most mineral and vegetable oils when stored and used under controlled conditions. Marcol 52 is used in cosmetics as a component of cleansers, hair care products, neutral and protective diluents for other ingredients such as essential oils, and other applications like make-ups and make-up removers, offering excellent skin compatibility with low irritancy and comedogenicity. In pharmaceutical and veterinary use, its high purity — free of toxic polycyclic aromatics and heavy metals — supports use as an adjuvant in animal vaccines (cattle, chickens and pigs) and in gelatine capsule manufacture. Marcol 52 meets the purity level of the European Pharmacopoeia Light Liquid Paraffin monograph, is registered to NSF H1, and meets or exceeds FDA 21 CFR 178.3620(a) and the US Pharmacopeia/National Formulary Light Mineral Oil monograph. Typical properties include a kinematic viscosity of 7.0-8.0 mm²/s at 40°C, density of 828-837 kg/m³ at 15°C, flash point ≥150°C and pour point ≤-6°C.
