Manufacturer's description

High-performance hydraulic fluids based on Group II base oil, for industrial applications. Shell Tellus S2 MX fluids are high-performance hydraulic fluids based on Group II base oils that deliver outstanding protection and performance in most industrial operations and mobile equipment. They resist degradation under demanding temperature and mechanical stress conditions and help prevent the formation of deposits that reduce hydraulic system efficiency

Applications

  • Industrial hydraulic systemsShell Tellus S2 MX fluids are suitable for a wide range of hydraulic system applications found in manufacturing and industrial environments
  • Mobile hydraulic power transmission systemsShell Tellus S2 MX fluids can be used effectively in mobile hydraulic applications such as excavators and cranes, except where significant ambient temperature variations occur. For these applications, we recommend the products in the Shell Tellus S2 VX range.
  • Marine hydraulic systemsSuitable for marine applications where ISO HM category hydraulic fluids are recommended. Specifications, approvals and recommendations: the product is formulated to meet:
  • Swedish Standard SS 15 54 34 AMFor the full list of equipment approvals and recommendations, we recommend consulting the Shell Technical Helpdesk. Compatibility and miscibility
  • CompatibilityShell Tellus S2 MX fluids are compatible with most types of hydraulic pump
  • Fluid compatibilityShell Tellus S2 MX fluids are compatible with most mineral oil based hydraulic fluids. However, hydraulic fluids must not be mixed with other fluid types (e.g. environmentally acceptable or fire-resistant fluids).
  • Compatible with seal materials and paintsShell Tellus S2 MX fluids are compatible with the seal materials and paints normally specified for use with mineral oils.

Performance & benefits

  • Resistance to thermal and chemical breakdown helps extend equipment maintenance intervals, minimising harmful sludge formation and providing better reliability and system cleanliness.
  • Good stability in the presence of moisture ensures long fluid life and reduces the risk of corrosion and rusting, particularly in moist or humid environments.
  • Designed to meet the demands of hydraulic systems well into the future, including new specifications such as Bosch Rexroth Fluid Rating RDE 90245 and enhanced extreme-pressure performance in the FZG test (FLS 11 at ISO VG 32).
  • Demonstrates excellent performance in the tough Denison T6H20C (dry and wet versions) and the demanding Eaton Vickers 35VQ25 tests, helping system components last longer.
  • Excellent filterability and high-performance water separation, air release and anti-foam characteristics help maintain or enhance the efficiency of hydraulic systems; optimised friction characteristics also help reduce harmful stick-slip effects.
  • An oil cleanliness particle count of ISO 4406 20/18/15 or better (measured at the point of filling) helps reduce the impact of contaminants on filter blocking, extending filter life and enhancing equipment protection.
  • Formulated for exceptional foam control and excellent air release, to facilitate efficient hydraulic power transfer and minimise the impact of cavitation-induced oxidation that can shorten fluid life.

Standards & approvals

  • Bosch Rexroth RE 90245

Bosch Rexroth RE 90245 — hydraulic fluid rating list

Bosch Rexroth's list of hydraulic fluids rated for use in its own pumps and motors. A fluid is listed after passing wear testing on axial piston pumps.

  • Parker Denison HF-0 — hydraulic fluid, most severe level

The most severe level of the Denison hydraulic fluid specification: the oil must pass the wear test on both a vane pump and a piston pump, dry and in the presence of water. HF-0 subsumes HF-1 and HF-2.

  • Eaton E-FDGN-TB002-E

    Eaton E-FDGN-TB002-E — hydraulic fluids

The Eaton technical bulletin listing the requirements for hydraulic fluids in Eaton and Vickers equipment, including the vane pump wear test.

  • Fives Cincinnati P-69

Fives Cincinnati P-69 — ISO VG 68 hydraulic oil

An approval number from the Fives Cincinnati list of fluids for use in its own machine tools. Approved hydraulic fluids must pass its own wear, filterability and water separation tests, beyond the DIN 51524-2 level.

  • ISO 11158 HM

Hydraulic oil, type H HM — ISO 11158

The international standard for mineral hydraulic fluids; class HM is the antiwear oil, the ISO counterpart of DIN 51524-2 HLP.

  • DIN 51524-2 HLP

Hydraulic oil HLP — DIN 51524, part 2

Part 2 of the German hydraulic fluid standard: HLP oils — mineral oils with oxidation, corrosion and antiwear additives. It is the most widely quoted reference in industrial hydraulics.

  • ASTM D 6158 HM

ASTM D6158, type HM — antiwear hydraulic oil

The American standard for mineral hydraulic oils of type HM, that is, oils with antiwear additives. It is the ASTM counterpart of DIN 51524-2 HLP and ISO 11158 HM.

  • DIN 51524

    Hydraulic oil — DIN 51524

The German standard for mineral hydraulic fluids, in three parts: HL (part 1), HLP (part 2) and HVLP (part 3), by additive package and viscosity index.

  • SS 15 54 34 AM

SS 15 54 34 — environmental requirements for hydraulic fluids (Sweden)

The Swedish standard requiring high biodegradability, low aquatic toxicity, and that the finished fluid not be classified as environmentally hazardous. It is required near groundwater and drinking water sources; verified products appear on the "SP list".
